Tampa, located in Hillsborough County on Florida’s Gulf Coast, has seen a steady rise in motor vehicle accidents over the past decade. In 2023 alone, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) reported more than 25,000 crashes in Hillsborough County, including over 200 fatalities. This year, there are already over 10,000 reported crashes in Hillsborough County. Tampa’s rapid development, combined with outdated road infrastructure and dense commuter traffic, makes driving conditions hazardous.
Why are crashes so common?
In Tampa, several roads and intersections consistently record high crash rates, including Big Bend Road and US‑301, with multiple hazardous intersections, especially where US‑301 meets Big Bend and Gibsonton Drive/Boyette Road. Additionally, I-4 is Florida’s deadliest stretch per mile, with approximately 1.41 fatalities per mile over six years, making it the most dangerous highway in the Tampa Bay area.
Frequent causes of car wrecks in Tampa include speeding and aggressive lane changes, distracted driving especially near urban corridors, impaired driving, and heavy rain combined with poor road conditions. These issues make Tampa’s roads particularly hazardous during peak travel times and severe weather.
Despite traffic safety initiatives, Hillsborough County remains one of Florida’s top counties for fatal crashes. Local Vision Zero programs aim to reduce traffic deaths, but drivers should continue to exercise caution, especially during rush hour and severe weather.
