The Paragard IUD remains the subject of a major nationwide lawsuit, with claims alleging the device breaks during removal, leading to serious injuries that the manufacturers, Teva Pharmaceuticals, allegedly failed to adequately warn consumers about . These cases have been centralized in Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) No. 2974, in the Northern District of Georgia.
Latest Updates in the MDL
As of mid 2025, there are over 3,000 active cases filed against the manufacturers in the MDL, and these numbers continue to grow as the public becomes aware of these concerns.
In 2025, the court selected several bellwether cases to move forward through discovery and toward trial. Expert testimony is now underway, and the first bellwether trial is currently scheduled for January 2026, with discovery expected to be completed by August 2025 .
Women whose Paragard IUD broke during removal and who experienced complications, such as the need for surgical removal, pain, infection, or infertility, may still be able to join the litigation. The deadline to file varies by state, and recent rulings have dismissed some cases based on statute-of-limitations technicalities, underscoring the importance of prompt legal action
Signature Injury
The main complications alleged in the Paragard MDL stem from IUD breakage during removal, leading to organ perforation, persistent pelvic pain, infections, infertility, and, in some cases, emergency hysterectomy or other major surgery, with life-altering consequences for many users.
