Introduction
Jardiance is an oral diabetes medication that is used in conjunction with exercise and other programs to assist people with type two diabetes in regulating their blood sugar levels. It is in SGLT2 inhibitors, which is a sodium-glucose code transporter 2 inhibitors.
What is Fournier’s Gangrene?
SGLT2 inhibitors lower blood sugar by causing the kidneys to remove the sugar from the body through urine. The bacteria feeds on the excessive amounts of sugar being excreted by the kidneys through the urethra. Typically, the bacteria enter through a cut or a wound at or near the site of exit on the body. This type of bacteria is known as Fournier’s Gangrene, which is a flesh-eating bacteria. Once the bacteria enters the body, it begins infecting the skin and immediately destroying it. The severity of the injuries caused by this type of bacteria can be fatal if not treated immediately.
When was the warning label issued?
In August 2018, the FDA issued a warning providing that some of the type two diabetes medications, such as Jardiance, had been linked to the deadly illness in the genital area known as Fournier’s Gangrene, which is the signature injury of the Jardiance lawsuit. Some of the symptoms of Fournier’s Gangrene include fever, severe pain, and swelling in the perineal areas, followed by an odor of decaying tissue.
