I am pleased to announce that I will be lecturing on the regulatory history of Pradaxa for the AAJ Pradaxa Litigation Group at the upcoming American Association for Justice’s (AAJ) Annual Convention to be held in Chicago on July 28-31, 2012. I will also be lecturing on Pradaxa bleeding dangers at the AAJ Section on Toxic, Environmental, and Pharmaceutical Torts (STEP) CLE Program.
A few words on the American Association for Justice and the AAJ Annual Convention:
For more than 65 years, the American Association for Justice, also known as the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA), has supported plaintiff trial lawyers as the collective voice of the trial bar on Capitol Hill and in courthouses across the nation and by providing exclusive services designed for trial lawyers. I have found AAJ an invaluable source of resources and cooperation between plaintiff counsel and been an active member of AAJ for over 12 years. If you represent plaintiffs in personal injury litigation, joining AAJ is an absolute must.
One of the other great aspects of AAJ is their “Litigation Groups”. AAJ Litigation groups are smaller (generally 50-200 member), specialized groups within the AAJ membership with the goal of maximizing attorney resources and expertise on a case-specific topic. I have been a member of numerous AAJ Litigation Groups and have Chaired 3 AAJ Litigation Groups over the past decade. The AAJ Pradaxa Litigation Group is one of the best examples of just how valuable a well-run AAJ Litigation group can help spearhead a litigation. The Pradaxa Litigation Group will hold its meeting on Saturday, July 28 between 2-4 PM. A little background on Pradaxa:
Since first lecturing on Pradaxa in April of this year for both the American Association for Justice’s “Handling the Pradaxa Case” in Baltimore and Mass Torts Made Perfect’s “Pradaxa Break-Out Session” in Las Vegas, my firm has been very active in Pradaxa litigation nationwide, having filed numerous lawsuits on behalf of the victims and families of Pradaxa bleeding events. For example, I and attorney Joseph Peiffer filed a Pradaxa bleeding lawsuit on behalf on the Estate of Opal Smiley in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky. The Smiley case was filed against Pradaxa manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, an irresponsible company that still has not recalled Pradaxa from the market despite the huge risk of Pradaxa bleeding dangers.
On the whole, Pradaxa has been the subject of intense, ongoing scrutiny from the US and foreign regulatory bodies. From October 2010 to March 2011 alone, 272,119 prescriptions for Pradaxa were issued in the U.S., records show. During that time frame, there were 932 “serious adverse events” reported to the Food and Drug Administration, with more than 500 reports of severe, life-threatening bleeding and 120 deaths.
